Plowshares Theatre Company and Theatre Nova are seeking African American males to audition for four key roles in a new musical  A DETROIT STORY on November 19. A DETROIT STORY is the musical of two families: one Black. One white. Both in love with a city that reflects the complexity of America throughout the 20th Century. Through their daughters, Stella and Rose, we weave an inspiring tale of resilience. It is the story of a city rich with music that sings its own song, exploring the forces that shaped it, and how Detroit helped shape the world.

The play will be presented in a public staged reading on December 12 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Date & Hours of Auditions: Monday, November 19. Audition times will be assigned. Hours are from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Location of Auditions: Equity and Non-Equity auditions for the plays will be held at the Techtown, 440 Burroughs St., Detroit MI 48202.

Appointments: Actors may request a specific appointment time by emailing casting@plowshares.org. 

Preparation: Actors interested in auditioning for the play should prepare 16 bars of music from a contemporary musical theatre or popular song. You may be asked to read sides, which will be available at the audition.

Plot Synopsis: A Detroit Story is the musical of two families: one Black. One white. Both in love with a city that reflects the complexity of America throughout the 20th Century.

Ethnicity: All Black or African American

Required skills: Strong singers/vocal performers who must sing a variety of musical styles (R&B, Soul, Pop) and rap.

Fleetwood – Young musician, Motown talent, ladies’ man.       Age range: early 30s to 40s
 Stella’s Husband, Rose’s lover, Mathew’s father.

Horace Jefferson – Father of Stella, Ford Motor Co. worker.      Age range: 34 to 45

Martin Jefferson – Stella and Fleetwood’s son, Civil Rights activist.       Age range: 20 to 30

Mathew – An orphan, former student of Stella, journalist.       Age range: 20 to 30
